There’s a rather curious sense of contradiction in the air this season. For fashion
has always been about a quest for novelty and innovation, constantly changing
from one season to the next. And yet for Fall/Winter 2010-11, it is championing
the right not to innovate at any price. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we can
expect a surge of retro collections, but more of a step back to timely classics with
new polish, those enduring pieces that confer both status and stature on the wearer.
The shift is visible in the sharp tailoring and suiting that hit the runways along with
more traditional lines, trusty neutral tones – blacks, greys, and beiges, most notably
at Chloé, Tommy Hilfiger and Veronique Leroy classic camel and desert sand
flooded the runway – and robust fabrics including tartans, cashmere, houndstooth,
leather, leather, leather and fur in equal abundance thanks to Fendi! Feminine with
intelligence, a-ha!
Day wear is natural and active, more relaxed than usual, with more rounded
lines…long sleeved cardigans redolent of the snowy Far North, swaying skirts for
swinging young women, from lingerie laying to leather and fur covered everything,
manish suits with satiny blouses and prep school reinvented.
As silhouettes adopt a more streamlined, understated stance and colors
become more neutral a good many accessories have taken the opposite road.
Ornamentation and decoration, YSL -- the choice is yours! Jeweled shoes, dizzyingly
towering heels, sky-high thigh-high leather (or fur) boots, fur bags, crossed body
bags, boxed bags? I suppose we’re anticipating a snow covered winter because
a feathered shoe or a furry boot graced nearly every collection! This winter, it’s
clearly up to accessories to work their magic and stake a claim at a time when
fashion has settled on durability.
When evening comes around however, it’s all black or black lace, or navies,
evocative autumn leaf colors, warm chalk and redder-than-red velvet. It all adds up
to an uncomplicated wardrobe that hovers between formal and fun, board meeting
and country house party, Marc Jacobs – I am looking forward to a beautifully
balanced elegant Fall and Winter. Oh, the message is clear, the point being to focus
on what really matters: real everyday living.
